80- year-old man on hunger strike over land

Kayunga. An 80-year-old man in Kayunga District has gone on hunger strike protesting the failure by State House to return his land, which he claims was illegally sold to President Museveni .
Mr Samuel Muhairwoha, a resident of Namizo village in Kayonza Sub-county, who this reporter found near Mukono District lands office on Tuesday, vowed to camp at the offices without eating anything until his land is returned. He explained that without his knowledge, his 425 acres of land was in 2001 sold to President Museveni by his in-law (now deceased) William Buriisa.

He said on learning about the illegal land transaction, he informed State House, and the President promised to intervene. After acquiring the land, the President reportedly used it to resettle 34 landless families from Ntungamo District.
Mr Muhairwoha, a cattle keeper, contends that he bought the land in question in 1979 and has a valid title deed. “State House officials claim they bought for me 300 acres of land in Kiryantama village, Bbaale sub-county, but when I asked them for its land title, which is proof that the land was mine, they failed to avail it,” Mzee Muhairwoha said.

He added: “In 2014, while visiting Kinnamawanga village, I informed President Museveni about the matter. He directed Ms Florence Kiconco, a legal officer in State House, to handle the matter but unfortunately she has not been of any help.”
However, Ms Kiconco said they had bought another piece of land for Mzee Muhairwoha, which she said, he refused to take.
