Long queues overwhelm Gulu as water taps run dry

In Summary

Main cause. The shortage has been blamed on the prolonged dry spell that has hit the district since last year

For two straight days now, piped water supply in Gulu Municipality has been unavailable, prompting a severe water crisis across the district.

The crisis, some say, could have been caused by a prolonged dry spell that has been running since last year.
Water levels at the National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NWSC) Oyitino – owned dam in Patiko Sub-county have significantly reduced affecting efficient supply.

In a statement issued on Monday, NWSC confirmed the shortage in Gulu Municipality, blaming it on the prolonged dry spell.
Mr Paul Rackara, the NWSC Gulu branch manager, told Daily Monitor that in more than 23 years they have not experienced such a crisis, especially in Gulu District.

He said they had tried to ration supply but it was overwhelming given that they are currently cleaning reservoirs.
Currently, the main sources of water are spring wells and boreholes but they have also been overwhelmed by long queues.

Long queues have been visible as early as 5am at several water sources in Kasubi Goans Quarters Parish in Bardege Division.
At about 8am, Ms Scovia Adong, 26, a resident of Kasubi Goans, had not drawn any water after standing in the queue for about four hours. She had arrived at the borehole as early as 5am.

“I didnt sleep enough because I wanted to wake up early to get some water. But I found very many people already. I will have to wait because I need water at home,” she said.

Dire need
Escalating situation. Alternative water sources have been overwhelmed which is escalating an already dire situation.
